About Joshua White, MSW, SEP
Licensed therapist and Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner specializing in trauma, anxiety, addiction recovery, and relationship healing in Mendham, New Jersey.
Professional Background
I am a New Jersey Licensed Clinical Social Worker (MSW) with an MSW from Kean University (2014) and a BA from the University of New Hampshire (2004). I have been practicing therapy since 2015 and bring over 10 years of experience to my work with clients.
In 2018, I became a certified Somatic Experiencing® Practitioner (SEP) after completing the rigorous three-year training program through Somatic Experiencing International. In 2020, I became a Somatic Experiencing® Assistant, which means I help deepen the learning of other SE practitioners through teaching and training. This reflects advanced expertise in nervous system work and trauma healing. I am a member of Somatic Experiencing International and continue ongoing education in trauma treatment.
I also have specialized training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and crisis intervention. I have completed the APSATS Multi-Dimensional Partner Trauma Model for working with betrayal trauma and am studying Stan Tatkin’s PACT method for attachment-based couples therapy.
My Approach and Specializations
My approach is nervous-system-centered and trauma-informed. I combine Somatic Experiencing® with parts work and attachment-based therapy to help clients develop real and lasting change. My style is direct, warm, and personal. I meet clients where they are and work at a pace that feels manageable.
Trauma and PTSD
I specialize in complex PTSD, childhood trauma, developmental trauma, and single-incident trauma using Somatic Experiencing®. This body-centered approach works as trauma is often stored in the autonomic nervous system, not just in thoughts and memories. I use an approach, focused on stabilization first and then working toward more intense traumas as one builds capacity.
Somatic Experiencing®
As a Somatic Experiencing® Assistant, I bring advanced expertise in nervous system regulation. SE is especially effective for clients who feel the effects of their trauma in their bodies as well as mentally and emotionally. I help clients discharge stuck survival energy so panic decreases, hypervigilance lessens, and emotional regulation improves.
Young Men
I also work with young men navigating anxiety, depression, school stress, and questions surrounding purpose and life goals. My approach is grounded and practical—I meet clients where they are without judgment and help them build real-life skills that support lasting change.
Addiction Recovery
I specialize in sex addiction, pornography addiction, and alcohol use. I view addiction as a coping method or survival strategy, not a moral failure. My approach is trauma-informed and integrates 12-step principles with nervous system work. I help clients heal from shame to break the cycle of relapse, empowering them to build a life where addiction is no longer necessary.
Couples Therapy
I help couples understand that most conflict is about the nervous systems need for regulation, attachment needs, and protective patterns, not about who is right or wrong. I combine attachment-based therapy with Somatic Experiencing® principles to help couples create safety, improve communication, and rebuild trust.
Who I Work With
I work primarily with people who have experienced significant trauma and are ready to do deeper work. This includes individuals stuck in anxiety, overwhelm, or self-defeating patterns, young men navigating life stressors and emotional regulation issues, couples wanting to strengthen their relationship or repair after betrayal, and individuals struggling with addiction who are ready to address the underlying causes and overcome.
Clients appreciate my direct, honest communication and warm, human approach. I integrate body and mind in healing so clients can embody the change, not just understand it intellectually.
