Why work with me?

That is a great question and I will share a bit about myself in order to answer it.

My journey as a therapist began when I witnessed a family member’s transformation by working through their personal trauma in therapy. It was in that moment I decided I wanted to help others in a similar way.

Since then, I have earned a Master’s Degree in Social Work, became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of New Jersey, and completed post-graduate studies - with the goal of helping others find transformation and growth.

But what about me or my family member? Who do you work with?

My practice focuses on a few key areas and groups of individuals.

People with trauma

I am passionate about working with individuals who have experienced traumas, ranging from physical injuries and accidents to complex traumas and C-PTSD.  I’ve had the privilege of seeing people recover from issues they have dealt with much of their lives, and it is deeply rewarding to be a part of those journeys. (See below for more information)

Adolescents and Young Adults

I enjoy working with adolescents and young adults. Helping young people gain insight, work through a relationship issue or their own trauma is incredibly fulfilling.

Those Struggling with Addiction

Another passion of mine is working with individuals with addiction issues. Those addictions might be to alcohol, substances, food, pornography or things such as gambling and gaming. Guiding someone from addiction into recovery and abundance is an incredible experience.

Take Away

The main focus of my work as a therapist is fostering growth and transformation for you or those you love. The most important thing for you to know is that this is about your journey and your transformation. If you feel I can be of assistance, don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d be honored to discuss how I may be able to help you or someone you care about.

What is trauma?

Trauma can be seen as a negative emotional, mental or physical response to an event. An individual could have been involved in a minor fall or accident which has led to trouble sleeping, and an increase in fear and anxiety. Another individual could have been involved in combat and be suffering from sleeplessness, flashbacks, anxiety and trouble connecting with others. The perceived severity of the event does not determine whether an individual experiences trauma. Though the event experienced may influence the severity of the traumatic response.

You may know that you have gone through severe trauma, such as a sexual assault, an abusive relationship or childhood trauma. Or you may be uncertain whether what you have experienced was trauma but are experiencing negative effects in your life such as unease, fear, anxiety, addiction and or depression. All of these issues can be supported through therapy.

Joshua White MSW, LCSW, SEP

As a therapist I have witnessed the debilitating affects trauma can have on individuals. I have seen how the body and mind holds onto trauma and how if an individual starts to become aware of the body not just their thoughts, feelings and beliefs - the trauma can be resolved.

But what does that look like?

This process can be as simple as sitting with your feelings and thoughts while noticing what the body is feeling as well. Often trauma is stored in the musculature and physiology of the body and not just the mind and when we attend to the mind and body as a whole trauma can be greatly relieved.

For example and individual might have been in a car accident and since the accident hasn’t been able to sleep. By sitting together and discussing the accident and bringing attention to how the body is feeling while talking about the accident the trauma can be resolved. This is a simple example but gives a good idea of one of the ways in which I work with trauma.
